Berlin, 11. December 2024 – In November 2024, Lex Hartman took on the role of Director and Senior Advisor at terralayr, a fully integrated energy flexibility provider.
Drawing on his extensive experience in German transmission networks and his network among grid operators and utility companies, Lex Hartman will support terralayr in accelerating the expansion of physical battery energy storage (BESS) assets.
This will enhance the foundation of storage capacity for terralayr's core service, "energy flexibility-as-a-service". Each new battery connected to the power grid and integrated into terralayr's platform increases the energy capacity available to terralayr’s customers. One example of battery storage usage is storing surplus electricity from renewable energy sources for profitable redistribution at a later time. Other customers, such as energy traders and major power consumers, can also access battery capacities via terralayr's digital platform without owning the assets themselves.
Previously, Lex Hartman was a board member of TenneT Germany, the largest transmission system operator in Germany, as well as the CEO of Shell-ubitricity, a provider of public charging stations for electric vehicles, which was acquired by Shell.
“It is undeniable that the expansion of energy storage systems in Germany is the missing piece of the puzzle for the energy transition. However, the current use of storage systems leaves much potential untapped. terralayr's innovative business model represents a significant step forward, making battery storage as an asset class much more attractive to investors. This, in turn, effectively advances the energy transition in Germany,” says Lex Hartman.
Philipp Man, co-founder and CEO of terralayr, adds: “I am delighted to welcome Lex Hartman, a long-standing expert in the energy sector, to terralayr. Lex will provide invaluable support in expanding our storage portfolio and strengthening our customer business.”
Founded in 2022, terralayr is a developer, operator, and aggregator of battery storage systems in Germany. With its flexibility platform, the company has introduced a new model for commercializing large-scale battery storage. terralayr has identified a gap between the full economic potential of battery storage and traditional business models. The company offers flexibility services with durations ranging from 15 minutes to 15 years, providing new opportunities for owners of grid-connected battery storage to market their capacities while achieving higher and more stable returns.
